List of German license plate codes that cannot be registered as domain names

The reason why we don't register German license plate codes as domain names is of historical nature. The growth of the Internet in Germany could not (and still cannot) be estimated precisely, so that in the future it may become useful to introduce a new regional subdivision below the Top Level Domain DE. In order to preserve this possibility we do not register German license plate codes. There are currently no plans to revise this policy.

Please note that some German license plate codes contain so-called Umlaut-characters, that are not legal in domain names. These license plate codes are transformed, such that Ü becomes UE, Ä becomes AE and Ö becomes OE. The resulting string is four characters long, instead of the usual three.
