Since a domain name is used internationally and in diverse computer programs there are certain rules which must be observed to create a domain name which can be considered legal within the GL zone. These rules are based on standards and recommendations from RFC’s, de-facto standards and experience on the Internet.
The domain name is limited to the following symbols:
A domain name may have no more than 63 characters (in addition to .gl) and may not begin or end with a hyphen. In addition, the following are noteworthy:
Domain names consisting only of numbers can create problems. There will be certain applications, etc. that can not utilize nor find such names on the Internet, so avoid such a name.
There is no difference between small and capital letters in a domain name. For example, tele.gl, TEle.GL and teLE.gl are all recognized as the same domain name.
The domain name ought to have between 3 and 25 characters (in addition to .gl)
The Danish letters, æ, ø, and å can not be used as part of a domain name and are normally translated as ae, oe and aa on the Internet.
